Your treatment plan will depend on your symptoms and your body responds to the medication. There are several medical therapies for Parkinson’s disease. The key is using the right medication, at the right dose for the symptoms. “Main goal of the medications, is to give sufficiently treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease so that the person can stay active and do exercise”

Treating with Syndopa or Tidomet (carbidopa+levodopa) is an important medication as the levodopa breaks down to dopamine medicines in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease result from loss of chemical dopamine in brain. The main and thus with the medication, we can give levodopa to the brain which is broken down to the dopamine in brain. There are other medications called dopamine agonist (such as pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine), which are also very helpful as well in managing Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

As the Parkinson’s disease progresses, patients have higher tendency to have extra movements aka dyskinesia which is related to the dopaminergic therapy. There are medications such as amantadine which can subside the extra movements if it occurs.

Surgical Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease

Surgical Treatment for Parkinson’s disease:

Deep Brain Stimulation is a USA-FDA approved treatment for Parkinson’s disease for more than a decade.

It is stimulation of a small area in a brain (subthalamic nucleus/STN or Globus Pallidus/GPi) which improves the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as tremor, slowness and rigidity.

Patient has to have a rigorous screening and evaluation to be eligible for the surgery. It is indicated for the patients who have motor fluctuations (wearing off /dyskinesias) with oral medications or patients who have refractory tremor.

Even after the surgery, the oral medications are continued, probably at a lower dose after the DBS.
